Fun, Easy-to-hold Design
The LeapFrog Tag Junior Book Pal's quirky shape and animal-like appearance attracts a toddler's attention. The large knob design makes it easy for toddlers to hold it in their tiny hands. With its durable exterior, the Book Pal can withstand a toddler's rambunctious use over many years and is easy to clean with a damp cloth. The Book Pal's optical reader is cleverly tucked into the bottom portion so that fingers cannot touch the sensor. And it's simple to dust using a cotton swab. The batteries and USB port are safely stored behind a compartment that closes securely with a screw.

An additional safety feature is the battery guard strap that firmly holds the batteries in place. A volume control button with low or high settings is located above the speakers on the front side of the Book Pal, while a conveniently placed on/off button is on the side. The speakers provide good, clear sound with little distortion. As a battery-saving feature, the Book Pal will turn off automatically after a period of inactivity.

The Tag Junior Reading system comes with one Activity Storybook. Its colorful illustrations and interesting narrative will appeal to young children while the thick, durable board book construction is made to last.

Advice for parents: keep food and beverages away from Tag Junior Book Pal as any spills could cause it to malfunction.

Exploration with Every Touch
The Tag Junior Reading System can engage toddlers for hours. By simply touching the Book Pal to a Tag Junior Book, children hear one of 130 responses or 24 book-based play activities. The responses can be songs, interesting sound effects, open-ended questions, amusing sentences, or reading aloud the text. Children can spend hours playing and exploring the different responses on every corner of the book. In many cases, they'll hear different responses when they touches the same spot in a book. The variety and randomness of the responses will keep their interest and initiate exploring the book over and over again.

Store up to Five Books
It's easy to use the LeapFrog Connect application that allows you to download audio to the Tag Junior Book Pal by connecting the USB cable (included) to a computer. Each book is centered on an important skill for toddlers to learn. Parents can print activity sheets, such as coloring pages, from the LeapFrog Connect site for additional activities and learning. You can also personalize the Tag Junior Reading System with your child's name so the Book Pal will incorporate his/her name into its greeting and farewell phrases.

In order to download the Book Pal's audio feature, you will need a computer that has 256MB of RAM and 300MB of free disk space. The download process is straightforward and the additional resources on the LeapFrog connect site are well worth it.

What's in the Box

4 out of 5 stars Good learning playbook devise   June 1, 2010
myst (Carpentersville, IL)
It has a snowman shape which I think is safe for my 2 year old daughter.
She seems to like playing w/ those leapfrog books.
Somewhat hard to replace 2AAA baterries, easy enough to go on-line and download contents for books you purchased.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Learning Tool for Toddlers...   May 5, 2010
Mercedes L. Johnmeyer (Kingsland, GA)
I purchased this for my 2 year old son, and we BOTH love it! I also purchased a few more books at the same time, but so far, his favorite is the 'Cars' shapes book. Jr. is so easy for toddlers to use, and the large body makes it simple for children to grip and place exactly where they want him. The voice is crisp, clear, and child-like...not a boring robotic sound.

One of the only downsides is the USB slot is in the battery compartment, so you have to take the cover off if you want to add or remove books. Not a huge deal since you shouldn't need to do this too often, but a slight pain. Overall though, I absolutely recommend this. I just love LeapFrog products as they're so easy to use, and great tools for learning. I've been recommend little Tag Jr. to all my friends with toddlers!

5 out of 5 stars Works Great Even For Mac Users   April 20, 2010
Amy Driver (Kansas City, MO)
I was a little nervous about buying this since we have a Mac at our house and all the negative reviews seemed say it didn't work for a mac. But I knew that Amazon had a great return policy, so I figured I'd just send it back if I couldn't get it to work on the Mac.

In less than 5 minutes, I had the software downloaded from LeapFrog (they make a version just for Macs), the books installed, the batteries put in and everything connected and working. It wasn't difficult AT ALL. All I did was follow the instructions.

I love that the Tag Junior says different things if my son puts it in the same spot more than once.

Also, one reviewer complained that you have to use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment to connect the USB driver. First, I would say that you can actually use a coin (it's not a small screwdriver slot) which makes it easy to open. Secondly, I'm glad the USB drive is hidden in the battery compartment. When you have a two year old using an electronic product, I'm afraid he would try to shove something in the USB connector slot (he's always trying to shove things in the USB slot on my laptop), so I would say smart design on LeapFrog's part.

Love the product!

5 out of 5 stars Fun, educational toy - a must have!   April 12, 2010
Heather Ribis (Cleveland, Ohio, USA)
I purchased the Tag Jr in February for my twins' 3rd birthday. They were preemies so they're developmentally behind other kids in their age group. My son especially has problems holding small items, so the bulky shape of the Tag Jr is perfect for his grasp. My son absolutely loves books and reading and uses the Tag Jr several times a day, every single day. I bought the Curious George colors book since my kids were struggling with their colors, and my son is now a pro at colors! I also got the Disney Cars books that teaches shapes - my barely 3 yr old son knows what an oval and a diamond are because of that book! It's incredible. He has learned so much and he's so engrossed in the books.

I was concerned when I bought it that they wouldn't know how to properly use it, but it is definitely tailored to the 2-4 age group. Kids can put the Tag Jr literally anywhere on the pages of the book and get some kind of response through the speaker. My son has had so much fun exploring the different places on the pages. He has his favorite spots too that he revisits over and over again in certain books.

It's very easy to set up the Tag Jr on your computer. I LOVE that you can customize the device to say your child's name - my son absolutely lights up every time he turns it on and hears his name!

It's a toy that can be used independently which I think really boosts kids' self-esteem. My son knows exactly how to turn the Tag Jr on and off, work the volume, etc. We got the bag to go along with it and it's easy for him to open the bag, sit down with a book and the device, and read all by himself.

I know I'm going on and on, but as a mother and an elementary school teacher, I can't say enough great things about the Tag Jr!! Every kid should have one! It's a much better way to keep your child occupied while you cook dinner than the TV is. :)

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this toy!!!   April 2, 2010
T. Mikula (Northwest Indiana)
I'm a huge reader and it was very important for me to get my son into reading. He has the carrying bag for this and 5 books. He learned right away (got this at 18mo) how to unzip the bag and take out his books. Of course his entertainment sometimes consists of just turning the unit on and off. His current fav book is the Backyardigans but we used to play games with the Curious George Color Fun book. We would play "Where is ....?" and then he'd have to find it with the reader. The books also play those games with you but he doesn't listen as well to those just yet. We're working on it, though! Definitely recommend this. Only downside is having to hook it up to the computer and download audio etc. Plus it only holds 5 books so we can't really expand our library without losing something he already enjoys. Otherwise, LOVE it!
